Stoic silence prevailed at the house of the man killed in a shootout with Alwar police on Thursday over suspected cow smuggling as family members mourned his death at Salaheri village in Nuh, a town in Mewat district of Haryana around 90 kms from Alwar.

The family and the villagers have yet to come to terms with the killing of Taleem (22), who they claimed had no connection with the cow smugglers as he earned his livelihood as a truck driver like his two elder brothers.

They are also shocked that the body of the deceased has not been handed over to them by the Alwar police on Friday. “For the last two days they have not handed over the body claiming strike by doctors. This is nothing but harassment,” said Aabid, deceased’s brother.

The family and locals of Sala-

NUH (MEWAT):

heri alleged that Taleem was killed in a cold-blooded encounter in the name of cow protection.

Alwar police had claimed that Taleem had been killed in a shootout with police while smuggling cows with six of his accomplices.

A social activist said on anonymity that it was possible that the youth was involved in the incident but police could have avoided killing him. “The boy has been brutally killed when he could have been arrested; also why has no police official received any injury in the encounter? He had no criminal past,” he added.

Taleem had come to Nuh with on December 4 and parked the truck at the owner’s house and stayed in Salaheri for two days. “He left on December 6,” said Deen Mohammad, his uncle.

They were shocked Thursday when they called Taleem on his phone and it was picked by an Alwar police official, who told them about the incident.

Around 200 people went to Alwar to claim the body but they alleged the police misbehaved with them. “They did not show the body. we had to return empty handed,” said Aabid, brother of the deceased.
