Police remand extended for Rajsamand killer

A court in Rajasthan’s Rajsamand on Sunday extended the police remand of murder accused Shambhu Lal Regar, by 10 days, district superinten­dent of police Manoj Kumar said.

On December 6, Regar hacked and burnt a man in Rajsamand.

He also got the gruesome act on camera by his minor nephew and uploaded the video on social media platforms, evoking widespread horror and condemnati­on.

Regar also recorded other videos where is seen making a string of inflammato­ry remarks against Muslims. He was arrested by police the next day from a relative’s house in Rajsamand’s Kelwa.

The victim, Mohammed Afrazul, 48, was migrant worker from West Bengal who was working in Rajsamand since the last 12-13 years.

The Rajasthan government on Saturday handed over a cheque of ₹5 lakh to his family members as compensati­on.

A team of activists visited Rajsamand on Sunday in connection with the case. “We have come to understand the ideology that drove the accused,” said Kavita Srivastava of the People’s Union for Civil Liberties (PUCL).

“The crime has shocked us all and we want to reach those who may have indoctrina­ted him,” said Srivastava, who was accompanie­d by the members of Mazdoor Kisan Shakti Sangathan and Rajsamand Mahila Manch apart from other members of the PUCL.

State director general of police OP Galhotra also visited the district on Friday and assured people that a competent team of the police was investigat­ing the case and will try to prosecute the accused at the earliest.

Chief minister Vasundhara Raje in a statement on Thursday condemned the incident, terming it as “deplorable”.
