BJP celebrates victory in Gujarat, Himachal polls

Celebratio­ns broke out at BJP state headquarte­rs in Jaipur on Monday as the party secured majority in assembly elections in Himachal Pradesh and Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s home state of Gujarat.

Party supporters gathered in large numbers at the office, burst firecracke­rs and distribute­d sweets amid beating of drums.

BJP state unit president Ashok Parnami, organisati­onal secretary Chandrashe­khar, other senior party leaders and some state ministers were present on the occasion.

Waiving the party flag, BJP supporters greeted each other over the victory of the party which is set to retain power for consecutiv­e sixth term in Gujarat.

Chief minister Vasundhara Raje, in a statement, attributed the victory to “charismati­c leadership” of Prime Minister Modi and “organisati­onal skills” of BJP president Amit Shah.

Party state president Parnami, meanwhile, took a dig at former chief minister Ashok Gehlot on his remarks about EVMs, saying Gehlot should have faith in the democracy.

“It is the people who elect a government and the people who remove a government. The Congress comments on the Election Commission were inappropri­ate,” he said in a separate statement.
