More and more poor students getting entry to IITs: Report

recent report released by IIT-Guwahati shows that more and more students from financiall­y weaker background­s are managing gain admission in the IITs.

According to the Joint Implementa­tion Committee Report, released by IIT Guwahati — which had organised JEE Advanced in 2016 — around 17.10% students who took admission in the IITs after clearing JEE Advanced in 2016 come from impoverish­ed background­s with their parents’ annual income being less than ₹1 lakh.

The annual income of parents of 9.03% students admitted to the IITs was between ₹1 lakh and 2 lakh while parents of 9.29% students earned between ₹2 and 3 lakh a year. Around 10,576 seats at 23 IITs in the country were up for grabs in 2016.

There were also students (16.39%) whose parents had an annual income of ₹8 lakh or more.

The report also shows that

apart from those from finically weaker background­s, students from agrarian families to have made it to the IITs in 2016.

Around 8.42% students admitted in the IITs have farmer parents while 2.5% students have illiterate parents and around 28.64% students have parents who have studied until class 10.

But it’s still the affluent section of the society which manages to grab the maximum number of seats. The report shows that 28.64% students admitted to IITs have parents in government service while 15.57% students have businessma­n parents and around 10.57% have parents in the service sector (private jobs).

Interestin­gly, around 25.64% students hail from rural areas while 74.36% students are from urban areas.

“Pursuing the IIT dream is no longer a privilege for those hailing from urban areas and from affluent background­s. A large number of aspirants hailing from the impoverish­ed and rural background are making it to the IITs every year,” director, Allen Career Institute, Kota, Naveen Maheshwari said.
