Women from the Rajput community Thursday warned Sanjay Leela Bhansali that he would have to commit jauhar (self immolation) if his film ‘Padmaavat’ was released.

Addressing a press conference hours after Supreme Court paved way for nationwide release of the film that was banned by four states, including Rajasthan, the women said that the community was firm on its decision for a ban on the film.

“We respect the Supreme Court order but we feel it’s onesided. We will file a petition in court and also meet the President with our version on the matter,” said Hemendra Kumari, working committee member, Rajput Sabha.

“We are fighting for our dignity and our history,” said Prerna Shekhawat, Kshatriya Mahila Sangh president. “When Arvind Singh ji of Udaipur has seen the film and rejected it, then why are the film-makers insisting on releasing it,” she asked.

Kumkum Singh Chittoda, working committee member of the Rajput Sabha said “Why is this film so important that it has to be released even after opposition? We will not accept any distortion of our history.”

Asked about some 1,800 women who have threatened to commit jauhar in Chittor if the film is released, Ramwati Kanwar of the Kshatriya Mahila Sangh said, “Why should those women commit jauhar? It is Bhansali who will have to commit jauhar. Hum Bhansali ki chita jalayenge.”
