Troubled by senior, cop, family end life

Troubled by alleged harassment by a senior colleague, a Nagaur police constable committed suicide, along with his wife and two children on Sunday.

Gena Ram (40), who was working as the driver of a senior police official in the district, and his family took the extreme step at his house in Bagrasar village of the district, said Raj Kumar Choudhary, additional superintendent of police (addl SP), headquarter.

Choudhary said that a case of theft was lodged by Ram’s neighbour, assistant sub-inspector Radha Kishan, against him in 2012 and Ram was under depression because of it. The constable sent a suicide note to his cousin at 4.22am that was signed by all the four family members, including his 22-year-old daughter and 20-year-old son.

In the five-page suicide note, Ram has blamed Kishan for pushing him to suicide. “Harassment and threats to implicate my son in theft case now almost on daily basis has made our lives hell,” wrote Ram.

He further wrote that in past three investigations his son was exonerated from the charge, but by influencing senior officials Kishan managed a reinvestigation in the matter for fourth time and this time his son was framed. “This jolted my whole family and filled us with guilt. We have no choice left but to kill ourselves, rather than live with stigma of theft,” wrote Ram in the note.

“Ram and Kishan were neighbours and had very good family terms. But when a theft happened in Kishan’s house, he filed a case against Ram for the same. The case was closed, but it was reopened,” said Nagaur circle officer (CO) Om Prakash Gautam, who is investigating the case.

He said he summoned Ram to present his case, but he did not appear. There was also an ongoing land dispute between the two, the CO added. Kishan is working in the district crime records bureau section at the office of Nagaur SP.

The constable’s father has alleged that Kishan, along with two others, was harassing his son for the past six years, a release from the office of Nagaur SP said.

Meanwhile, Dalit social organisations have come forward demanding action against the erring policemen, who pushed a Dalit policeman and his family to commit suicide.
