Geelani, Mirwaiz held for defying house arrest

leaders Syed Ali Shah Geelani and Mirwaiz Umer Farooq were on Friday detained after they defied house arrest, while Yasin Malik was held for trying to take out a march in Shopian town against civilian killings in the Kashmir Valley.

Immediatel­y after the arrest of the Jammu and Kashmir Liberation Front leader, clashes erupted inShopianb­etweenston­e-pelting youths and security forces. The separatist Joint Resistance Leadership headed by Hurriyat leaders Geelani, Umer Farooq and Malik had called for a protest march to express solidarity with the families of the five civilians killed in Shopian.

Authoritie­s had imposed restrictio­ns in Srinagar and Shopian to foil the protest. Prohibitor­y orders banning the assembly of five or more people were clamped in Rainawari, Nowhatta, MR Gunj, Safakadal, Khanyar, Maisuma and Kralkhud in Srinagar. A court here on Friday accepted framing of terror charges against Pakistan-based terrorist leaders Hafiz Saeed and Syed Salahuddin and seven Kashmiri separatist leaders, accused of sponsoring and stoking terror in Jammu and Kashmir.

Omar Abdullah on Friday demanded the constituti­on of a special investigat­ion team (SIT) to probe the killings of three people in firing by security forces when a convoy was attacked by stone-pelters in Shopian district.

“It will be my humble request to you to constitute high-level SIT to probe both the FIRs (in Shopian incident). Please give orders to set up a high-level SIT and leave it to them to investigat­e,” Omar said in Assembly.
