Minutes before being murdered on a busy road in west Delhi, 23-year-old Ankit Saxena had ‘denied’ being in a relationship with the woman whose family members had allegedly accosted and thrashed him before slitting his throat with a knife, the Delhi Police said after talking to eyewitnesses. The cops, however, said it could be because Ankit was being threatened with a knife.

A senior police officer said investigation has revealed that Ankit and the woman Shehzadi were in a relationship for the past two years. However, when confronted by the woman’s family on Friday, Ankit denied that he had anything to do with her, the officer said.

The woman’s parents, uncle and a minor brother had allegedly confronted Ankit and accused him of abducting the woman. Ankit’s parents had also reached the spot as the woman’s family members allegedly started thrashing him.

“When he was confronted about her disappearance on the day of the crime, he told them that he did not have any role in it and that he was not in a relationship with her in the first place. It could be because they were carrying a knife and he thought that was the

only way to save his life,” said the officer.

Ankit and as his parents insisted that they should all go the nearby police station and discuss the matter further. “The accused were unrelenting and slit his throat with a sharp weapon,” the officer said.

The weapon used in the crime belonged to Shehzadi’s father and who used to work as a butcher, the police said.

While the accused have told the police that they killed Ankit in a fit of rage, investigators are verifying these claims. “We suspect when they left home, they had decided to kill Ankit,” the officer said. Deputy commissioner of police (West) Vijay Kumar said that all the three adult accused have been sent to judicial custody as the case did not require their custodial interrogation.
