Woman kills husband with paramour’s help in Bihar, arrested

Police have arrested a mother of four for allegedly killing her husband with the help of her paramour in Purnia district of Bihar.

Police said Sonamani Devi, 30, was arrested from her house at Singhania village in Bhawanipur police station area of the district, 368km northeast of Patna, on Friday. She confessed to killing her husband Bangtu Mandal, 35, with the help of her paramour Khagendra Mandal, Bhawanipur police station SHO Santosh Mandal said. The SHO said Sonamani and Bangtu, a marginal farmer, were married for 10 years and had four children — a son and three daughters.

During preliminar­y interrogat­ion, Sonamani told the police that she had an extra marital affair with Khagendra for a couple of years and her husband was opposed to their relationsh­ip, the SHO said. She had plotted the murder when her lover promised to marry her after Bangtu’s death. “On Thursday, Sonamani Devi called Bangtu to a maize field, where she and Khagendra strangulat­ed him to death. The woman was arrested after the victim’s sister, Sakli Devi, who lives in the same village, informed the police that Bangtu was missing and she suspected that he may have been killed by his wife,” the SHO said.

“Sonamani Devi tried to mislead the police before breaking down and confessing. On the basis of her revelation­s, the police recovered the body from the maize field on Friday,” the SHO said, adding that Khagendra was absconding. An FIR had been registered.
