Abhishek, Aparna best athletes in track and field

KHELO INDIA Uttar Pradesh claim overall championsh­ip, Arnav wins hammer NEWDELHI:

Shot-putter Abhishek Singh of Uttar Pradesh and hurdler Aparna Roy of Kerala were declared best athletes of track and field in the first Khelo India School Games at the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium on Saturday.

Abhishek Singh had won gold with a throw of 18.73m, while Aparna won the girls 100m hurdles in 14.02 seconds.

Uttar Pradesh also won the overall championsh­ip. Throwers from UP were impressive on the final day of athletics, winning gold and silver in boys’ hammer. Arnav Yadav stole the show with a throw of 64.09m. Afsar Ahmad was second (60.54m) and Delhi’s Paras Deshwal third (58.14m).

Delhi’s Harshita Sherawat won the girls’ hammer(58.53m).

Uttarakhan­d excelled in race walking, winning three medals, including two gold. Paramjeet Singh Bisht won the boys’ 5,000m race walk event, clocking 21 min 19.84 secs. Teammate Mukesh Kumar made it 1-2. Uttarakhan­d’s Mansi Negi won the girls’ 3,000m walk (14:44.44).

In boys’ 400m, the top three dipped under 49 seconds.The top six girls came under 60 seconds.

Dhanush Kumar of Andhra Pradesh edged out D Srikanth of Telangana to win the boys’ race in 49.05 secs. Srikanth clocked 49.09 secs. Kerala’s Sayooj TK was third (49.75 secs).

Sumathira B of Tamil Nadu won the girls’ race at 56.39 secs with Tai Bamhane (Maharashtr­a) second (57.22 secs), having claimed an 800-1500 double. Kerala’s Sandra AS was third.

Maharashtr­a’s Rakesh Gond won the boys’ pole-vault (4.70m).

Kerala boys and Maharashtr­a girls won the 4x400m relay. Karnataka boys and Tamil Nadu girls won the 4x400m relay.
