: Union home minister Rajnath Singh on Sunday lauded the NDA government for ‘bringing an end to insurgency’ in the northeast, stating that the uprising could be uprooted only after the BJP-led government came to power in the Centre.

Addressing a public meeting in poll-bound Tripura’s capital, Singh credited Bangladesh with helping India curb the violent insurgent movement.

“India shares cordial relations with Bangladesh. And I must say that we could uproot insurgency problem with the assistance of Bangladesh. Insurgency problem has come to an end only after NDA came to power in the Centre,” he said while addressing a public meeting held at Basic Training College ground at Indranagar.

Praising both former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee and incumbent PM Narendra Modi-led NDA governments, Singh said the country has seen development only during the terms of these two governments.

Speaking about the initiative undertaken by the BJP governments for the northeast, he said:

“Ministry for development of

north eastern region, initiated by Atal Bihari Vajpayee, aimed to fast track northeast’s progress. Introduction of Tripura Sundari Express train to connect Tripura with New Delhi, bus-service from Agartala to Kolkata via Dhaka were done only with BJP’s efforts. Except BJP, no other party has thought about the welfare of the northeast in particular and India at an overall level.

Taking on the state’s Left government, Singh said: “No government requires 25 years to usher development in any state. But in Tripura, there are many people who cannot even afford a bicycle. On the contrary, one should look at Chhatisgarh, Madhya Pradesh and Jharkhand for good governance.”

IRANI TAKES ON LEFT

Union I&B and textiles minister Smriti Irani said on Sunday that law and order had collapsed in the Left-rule Tripura, which posed a threat to the safety of people, especially women.

“If a government fails to ensure safety for women despite being in power for more than two decades, a change is required. I appeal to the people to bring BJP to power this time,” she said while addressing a separate rally at Chandipur , about 150 kilometres away from Agartala.
