Thakkar wins silver in TT World Junior Circuit Finals
Manav Thakkar put up a spectacular display to clinch silver in the International Table Tennis Federation’s Luxembourg 2017 World Junior Circuit Finals on Sunday night. In the finals, the third seeded Manav was upstaged by USA’s Kanak Jha 3-4 (9-11, 11-3, 9-11, 11-6, 11-3, 9-11, 11-6). Earlier in the semis, Manav, currently the U-18 World No. 1, beat Egyptian Abdul-Azez Youssef 4-1 (11-9, 7-11, 14-12, 11-9, 11-6.
“I felt very good, it was a good match. My opponent played really very well,” said Thakkar.
ARMY SCHOOL WINS BAYERN CUP INDIA
Army Public School from Bangalore won the FC Bayern Youth Cup India title beating Mumbai-based Campeon School 4-1 in the U-16, seven-a-side inter-school football tournament. French football legend and FC Bayern Hall of Famer Bixente Lizarazu, who was present at the final said the tournament will strengthen the grassroots. “It was a great weekend with the kids and a pleasure to see such skilled young talent. FC Bayern Youth Cup will go a long way in nurturing grassroots football.”
WOODLAND WINS PHOENIX OPEN PLAYOFF
American Gary Woodland parred the first extra hole to beat compatriot Chez Reavie in a Phoenix Open sudden-death playoff on Sunday as two of the lesser-known players on the PGA Tour battled for victory after the big names fluffed their lines.
Woodland needed two putts from the fringe at the par-four 18th to clinch victory after Reavie missed a 10-foot par putt at TPC Scottsdale in Arizona.
