21-year-old biker was killed after a piece of iron wire used to tie two police barricades allegedly got entangled around his neck and slit his throat in Delhi’s Netaji Subhash Place on Thursday morning.

The victim, identified as Abhishek, worked as a driver with an online cab aggregator company. He lived with his family in Shakurpur JJ Colony and also worked as a part time DJ.

Aslam Khan, deputy commissioner of police (northwest), confirmed that Abhishek’s neck got entangled in the police barricade wire and he died because of it.

“There is a cut mark around his neck. His autopsy is underway. The report will confirm if he died due to strangulation or cutting of his throat,” said Khan, adding police had used the wire to keep the barricades attached with each other on the road.

While the police is yet to ascertain the sequence of events that led to Abhishek’s death, it is suspected that he was either trying to park between the barricades and

did not see the wire or drove into it by accident.

The body was sent to Baba Saheb Ambedkar hospital for the autopsy. A case under relevant sections of Indian Penal Code was registered at the Subhash Place police station.

While the station house officer was sent to the district line, a subinspector and four beat staff were placed under suspension for their negligence that claimed the biker’s life.

“During initial investigation, we found negligence on the part of area’s Station House Officer (SHO), four constables and the division staff. We have sent SHO Arvind Kumar to the district lines for questioning. Head constable Jitender and constables Balkari, Ravinder, Mukesh and Gaurav, and the division officers -- Sub Inspector Sandeep Dabbas and Assistant Sub Inspector Ravinder -- have been suspended for negligent behaviour on duty.
