A Dalit law student died on Sunday after he was allegedly attacked with bricks and iron rods near a restaurant in Katra area of Allahabad on Saturday night. Based on a video of the assault made by passers-by, police identified one of the three assailants as Vijay Shankar, a travelling ticket examiner (TTE) with the railways.

Colonelganj inspector, Awadhesh Singh said Dilip Saroj (24), a law student at Allahabad Degree College (ADC), sustained serious head injuries and succumbed on Sunday.

A restaurant owner informed police Saroj and his friends had come to the restaurant on Saturday night. They had an argument with some men who came in an SUV and started assaulting the students, Singh said.

While Saroj’s friends fled, the men caught Saroj and assaulted him with an iron rod and bricks, and later left the place. The restaurant owner then rushed Dilip to a private hospital with the help of his staff.

An FIR had been lodged against three people by Dilip’s brother Mahesh Chandra Saroj, who works with the statistical department in Rae Bareli.

Hailing from Hathigawa area in Pratapgarh, Dilip was living in a rented accommodation to pursue his studies, police said.
