A 50-year-old man was allegedly bludgeoned to death by his son after he reportedly attempted to rape his daughterin-law under the influence of liquor in dry Bihar’s Rohtas district on Saturday evening. The family, however, claimed the man had committed suicide.

Police said the accused was absconding after the incident that took place at Dharhara village in Darihat police station area of the district, 130km south west to state capital, Patna.

An FIR for murder had been registered against the victim’s son on the statement of the village chowkidar after family members refused to lodge a formal complaint, Darihat police station SHO Siya Ram Singh said. The victim’s wife and daughter-inlaw claimed that the man was ashamed of his deeds and committed suicide by banging his head against a brick, the station house officer (SHO) said.

Singh said the deceased had a criminal antecedent and was accused in a number of murder and theft cases. “He was freed from jail two years ago after serving a sentence in a murder case,” the SHO added. In her statement, the victim’s daughter-in-law said her father-in-law had entered her room in an inebriated condition and tried to rape her on Saturday evening. “However, I raised an alarm and my mother-in-law came to my rescue. Apparently ashamed by his misdeed, my father-in-law later committed suicide,” she told the police.

The village chowkidar, however, suspected that the man could have been killed by his son in a fit of rage following the alleged rape bid. The chowkidar based his suspicion on the fact that the deceased’s son was absconding, the SHO said.

The body of the deceased was handed over to the family after the postmortem examination, the SHO said, adding that the last rites were performed by the victim’s wife. “When the man’s son, returned home and came to know of the incident, he bludgeoned his father to death by repeatedly hitting him on his head with a brick,” the chowkidar said.
