‘The verdict in Tripura is a clear setback for us’

- Jayanth Jacob jayanth.jacob@hindustantimes.com

CPI(M) general secretary Sitaram Yechury spoke to Hindustan Times about the defeat of his party in Tripura and what it means for the CPI(M). Excerpts:

What are your thoughts on the Tripura verdict?

It is a clear setback for us. We were hoping to get elected for the sixth consecutive time. The

BJP and its ally IPFT will form the government in the state. We will wait for the final results and then analyse to see what went wrong. The state committee of the party will take necessary corrective measures.

What do you feel about the nature of the verdict?

As I said earlier, we will make a detailed analysis of it all. Don’t forget two important aspects of this election. The BJP has utilised massive deployment of money and other resources to influence polls. It also succeeded in bringing in its kitty the vote share of Congress — the principal opposition party in the state.

Is BJP a big threat?

Our party has already said that BJP is a bigger threat. This is something we have been saying. We are working for its defeat. We will continue toopposeBJPanditsdivisive agenda not only in Tripura but all over the country. It is imperative for those who believe in India’s constitutional ideals to defeat the nefarious designs of the BJP-RSS. For us, it is an ongoing battle. And we will fight it.

NEWDELHI:

What will be the impact of the results on the party line?

The draft political resolution of the CPI(M) for the party congress (the biggest decision making body of the CPI(M) to be held in Hyderabad in April) is ready. It will be discussed at the party Congress. I cannot say anything on this right now.
