IMPHAL THE BRIDGE GAVE IN WHEN A 10WHEELER TRUCK LADEN WITH RICE WAS CROSSING IT

: Vehicular movement along the Imphal-Jiribam sector of National Highway 37, which connects Manipur with the rest of the country, was hit on Sunday after a bridge collapsed in Tamenglong district .

Located at Nungdolan, about 150 km west of Imphal, the bridge gave in when a 10-wheeler truck laden with rice was crossing it, police officials said on the condition of anonymity. They added that the “old and fragile structure” was scheduled to undergo renovation soon.

The driver of the 10-wheeler truck managed to escape with a few injuries and was receiving medical treatment at the Community Health Centre in Noney district, for treatment, the officials added.

Jiribam district police had advised people against plying on the bridge till the renovation work was completed.

The bridge collapse left five goods-laden trucks travelling to Imphal stranded, a Manipur police official stationed at Nungba police station said when contacted on phone.

However, light vehicles and empty trucks coming from Imphal were moving towards Jiribam using a temporary bypass road which is currently under repair.

Goods-laden trucks would be able to use the bypass road once it’s is fully repaired in a couple of days, the police official quoted earlier added.
