Halep beat Karolina’s sister Kristyna Pliskova 6-4, 6-4 while Karolina eased past Irina-Camelia Begu 7-6 (7/4), 6-1 to reach the third round of the WTA/ATP event. Muguruza became the first major casualty, suffering a shock 2-6, 7-5, 6-1 defeat to world No 100 Sachia Vickery.

KYRGIOS PULLS OUT

Australia’s Nick Kyrgios pulled out of the ATP Indian Wells tournament on Friday with an elbow injury. Kyrgios, who was seeded 17th in Indian Wells, withdrew ahead of his opening second round match against Russian Danil Medvedev.

SHARAPOVA SPLITS WITH LONG TIME COACH

Maria Sharapova has split with her long time coach after losing in the first round of the BNP Paribas Open. She announced the mutual parting with Sven Groeneveld on Friday, two days after she was beaten by Naomi Osaka of Japan in her return to Indian Wells after a three-year absence. “After four successful and challengin­g years of collaborat­ion together, I would like to thank Sven for his incredible loyalty and work ethic,” Sharapova said in a statement.
