Delhi HC grants bail to AAP MLA in chief secretary assault case

: The Delhi high court on Monday granted bail to Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) legislator Amanatulla­h Khan who was arrested for allegedly assaulting chief secretary Anshu Prakash last month at Delhi chief minister’s residence. Justice Mukta Gupta granted bail to Khan asking him to furnish a personal bond of ₹50,000 with two sureties of the like amount. “Petitioner (Khan) is not required for any custodial interrogat­ion and no useful purpose shall be served by keeping them under incarcerat­ion,” the bail plea moved by Khan’s advocate Mohd Irsad said.

The proceeding­s in both Houses of Parliament were stalled for the sixth day on Monday with no let up in protests by the Opposition parties and the Telugu Desam Party, an ally in the National Democratic Alliance, over various issues, including the banking fraud, demand for a special category status to Andhra Pradesh and the Cauvery river water dispute.

The Aam Aadmi Party too joined the protests in Rajya Sabha, demanding an end to the sealing drive in Delhi.

Amid the din in Lok Sabha, minister of state for finance Shiv Pratap Shukla introduced The Fugitive Economic Offenders Bill, 2018, that seeks to confiscate all assets of absconding fraudsters and loan defaulters for recovering dues from them.

The bill was introduced in the backdrop of protests over the nearly ~12,700 crore fraud at Punjab National Bank in which businessma­n Nirav Modi is involved. The proposed law will apply to defaulters who have an outstandin­g of ~100 crore or more and have fled the country.

The minister also introduced the The Chit Funds (Amendment) Bill, 2018.
