Discom’s hi-tech relays to check mishaps due to snapping of high-tension wires
JAIPUR: The highimpedance frequency relay trips and ensures that power supply is cut off when the wire snaps due to any reason.

The Jaipur Vidyut Vitran Nigam Limited, known as Jaipur discom, has taken a decision to replace the existing relays in vacuum circuit breakers used in 11 KVA feeder lines with highimpedance frequency relays.
The idea behind the decision is to curb accidents resulting from the snapping of high-tension wires.
“The high-impedance frequency relay trips and ensures that power supply is cut off when the wire snaps due to any reason,” said Jaipur discom managing director RG Gutpa.
A relay is an electrical device, typically incorporating an electromagnet, which is activated by a current or signal in one circuit to open or close another circuit.
The discom will also use modern equipment to speed up the replacement of faulty transformers. It will make available trolley mounted crane for swift and safe transportation of the transformers in all the divisional and circle headquarters.
In addition, the entire process of the transportation and installation of the transformer will be tracked using GPS-enabled software to ensure that the transformer has been installed at the designated location within the set deadline. The services of the trolley mounted crane will be available 24x7.
“The tenders have been invited and the entire process will be completed within two months,” Gupta said.
Last week, two private buses were gutted after a high-tension wire fell on them at NH-3 in Dholpur. The buses were parked near a petrol pump. A major accident was averted, as fire tenders extinguished the blaze before it could spread to the petrol pump. The high-tension wire had fallen on one of the buses, which caught fire and the blaze had spread to another bus parked nearby, according to the Sadar police. Similar incidents have happened in the past also.
Under Mukhya Mantri Vidyut Sudhar Yojana, the state discoms have carried out replacement of faulty meters and transformers and vigilance at zonal level has been increased.
The Jaipur discom pared its losses to ₹428 crore in the current financial year up to December 2017, as against ₹1,714 crore during the corresponding period last fiscal. The discom plans to turn into profit in the current financial year.
