Suspected poachers caught on camera trap sent to judicial custody

A lower court has sent two suspected poachers, arrested by the Bundi police, to 15-day judicial custody on Sunday.

On February 23, the two armed men were caught on camera traps installed inside the Ramgarh Sanctuary in Bundi district. The forest department is on alert as a tiger (T-91) is residing in the area.

Assistant sub-inspector (ASI) at police station Dei under Nainwa circle, Radhyeshya­m said that the two arrested were presented in court in Keshorai Patan (Bundi) on Sunday. The court has sent them to 15-day judicial custody.

The two arrested have been identified as Prem Shankar Meena (40) and Brahmanand Meena (32) of Motipura village. They were arrested on March 23.

The forest department has handed over the case registered by them to the police. Guns recovered from the accused are illegal.

Deputy forest officer, Kota (wildlife) Sunil Chidri said, “Cases have been registered under various sections of Wildlife Protection Act 1972 and under Arms Act by the police. We had sought help from the police and joint raids are being conducted to arrest the poachers. On March 23, Prem Shankar Meena and Brahmanand Meena were arrested with guns,” he said.

He said the cases registered under section 9, 27, 30 and 31 of Wildlife Protection Act 1972 have also been handed over to the police.

Since November 2017, a male tiger (T-91) of Ranthambor­e Tiger Reserve is residing in Ramgarh sanctuary area. The tiger is among the probables to be relocated to the Mukundra Tiger Hills Reserve in Kota.

The camera trap image shows two suspected armed poachers at 10.20 pm on February 22 holding a torch moving in the Ramgarh area. The Ramgarh Vishdhari Wildlife Sanctuary is located 45 kilometres from Bundi on the Bundi-Nainwa road.
