Sadar Dholpur has become the state’s first childfriendly police station with a colourful room for children at the police station, officials said. The room will be inaugurated on Monday by Manan Chaturvedi, chairperson of Rajasthan State Commission for Protection of Child Rights, and Rajesh Singh, Dholpur superintendent of police (SP).

“Abandoned children, children accused of crimes, etc. who are brought to the police station will be made to sit in the room. There are colourful drawings on the walls beside toy cars, dolls, carom boards and comics in the room,” said Niyaj Mohammad Khan, station house officer, Sadar Dholpur.

The idea behind creating this room was to give the children, who spend a few hours at the police station, a lively and playful atmosphere, said the SP. “Manan Chaturvedi came to our district last year and suggested that we develop one such room that will serve as a model for other police stations in the state,” said Singh.

He added that the room’s renovation and development were being done through crowdfunding and activist Rakesh Tiwari played an instrumental role in the same. “We did not ask for money. We just asked people to take up some part of the work. The Rotary Club came

: An official of the Public Health Engineering Department (PHED) has lodged an FIR against NCC Limited, a construction company headquartered in Hyderabad after the reservoir built by the company in Jhunjhunu’s Malsisar village suffered a breach on Saturday causing the water to flood nearby areas.

The FIR has been lodged at Malsisar police station against the company for criminal negligence, said Jhunjhunu collector Dinesh Kumar Yadav. No casualties were reported in the incident. A few houses and government buildings were flooded.

“About Rs 2.75 crore will be deducted from the company’s bills. In addition, the company is being blacklisted as it has proved to be negligent and incompetent. No construction contracts of the department will be given to it in future,” said Rajat Kumar Mishra, principal secretary, Public Health Engineering Department (PHED).

He added that the construction work of the reservoir was completed in 2016 and there were three executive engineers of the government who oversaw the work. “Two of them, who are still in service, have been suspended. We’ll also take action against the third one, who took voluntary retirement,” said Mishra.

Furthermore, NCC Limited has been told to complete the restoration work of the reservoir at the earliest. The reservoir had not yet been handed over to PHED and is still within the defect liability period so all expenditure on restoration will be incurred by the company, Mishra said.

These punitive measures were taken by the department after prima facie assessment of the situation. “A committee of three chief engineers has been constituted to carry out a thorough investigation in the case and submit a report within a month. The breach took place in around 5% of the reservoir. The quality of the remaining construction will also be checked,” said the official.

forward and got the walls painted, Ramlal Bansal paid for the carpeting of the room, Majid Sharifi bought the furniture and so on,” said Tiwari, who works as an advocacy officer with Prayatn, an NGO working for women and child rights.

He added that the children are mostly scared whenever they have to come to a police station and these rooms will provide them with a congenial atmosphere and also help them open up to the police. Chaturvedi said that the creation of this room at Sadar Dholpur is a first under the ‘Ek Kadam Bachpan Ki Or’ campaign and subsequently, a room for children will be created at all 850 police stations across the state.
