police have detained a group of farmers protesting under the banner of Kisan Mahapanchayat on Tuesday from Jyoti Nagar near the assembly while they were on their way to the CM’s Civil Lines residence.

Kisan Mahapanchayat leader Rampal Jat was among those detained. The farmers were later taken to Chomu and allowed to go. Additional police commissioner Vikas Pathak said no permission was given for the assembly of the farmers near Jyoti Nagar T point and subsequent march to Civil Lines as section 144 of CrPc was imposed in the area.

Jat said that they were supposed to stage a peaceful protest against the government for not fulfilling its promise of purchase of crops at minimum support price (MSP) among other demands. “A group of 50 farmers had assembled at Jyoti Nagar. We had planned a bigger protest and asked for permission on March 26. However, about 500 vehicles were not allowed to enter and then we were arrested at about 12.45 pm on the pretext of section 144 of CrPc being imposed in Civil Lines,” he said.

The demands include implementation of Swaminathan Committee report, reimbursement of ₹471 crore for crops purchased in farmers account with 15% interest, compensation to those farmers whose crops have not been purchased at MSP, hiking minimum procurement price of milk among others.

On February 22, police had foiled a plan of farmers under the banner of All India Kisan Sabha to stage a sit-in at the assembly.
