The Indian contingent on Tuesday avoided a major embarrassment in the needle fiasco after the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) court let off Amol Patil, a doctor with the boxing squad, with a “strongly written reprimand”.

The CGF court, while hearing a complaint filed by CGF’s medical commission into an alleged breach of no-needle policy by the Indians, warned the country “to ensure that no further infractions of CGF Policies occur by any member of Indian Team”.

The Indian contingent has been under the scanner for the last three days after syringes were found near the accommodation of Indian boxers and was reported to the organisers by a cleaner. The 12-member boxing squad was subjected to dope tests.

Patil admitted he had given a vitamin B complex injection to a boxer who was unwell.

“As part of the investigation, the doctor in question confirmed that he had administered a vitamin B complex, by injection, to an athlete that was feeling unwell,” CGF said in a statement. “Upon questioning, the doctor conceded that he was aware of the ‘No Needle Policy’ and detailed all use of needles for the period March 19 to date and co-operated in disclosing all medication in his possession,” the CGF stated.

“The Federation Court found that there was a breach of the ‘No Needle Policy’ in that the doctor left needles in the room while he went to the Polyclinic to obtain sharp bins for the disposal. Under the No Needle Policy, needles are to be stored in a central secured location, access to which is restricted to medical personnel of CGA delegation. The needles in question were not disposed of until he had made two trips to the Polyclinic,” the CGF said.
