221 inmates serving life terms in J’khand jails to be set free soon

State Capital Punishment Review Board on Monday decided to set free 221 prisoners serving life terms in different jails of Jharkhand.
The prisoners who will have new lives include 104 scheduled tribes and three women prisoners. They will be freed from the jails soon.
The meeting chaired by chief minister Raghubar Das, who holds the home ministry portfolio, directed the prison department to make arrangements for the release of the prisoners in jail beyond 20 years under section 433(A) of the CrPC and those serving life terms (14 years jail term).
Giving details of the review meeting, home secretary SKG Rahate said 233 cases were considered out of which 221 cases were cleared. Twelve cases were kept pending for want of detail Prisoners to be freed from the following jails:
Birsa Munda central Jail, Ranchi — 100
LJPN central Jail, Hazaribag — 54
Hazaribag Open Jail, Hazaribag —1
Dumka Central Jail,
Dumka — 40
Ghagidih central Jail,
East Singhbhum — 23 Medininagar central Jail, Palamu —2
Chas Jail, Bokaro — 01 reports regarding their conducts in the jails. Out of the 233 cases, 218 were pertaining to section 433(A) of the CrPC and 15 life imprisonment cases.
The board arrived at the deci- sion to free 221 jail inmates as per the directives of the central remission board, said Rahate.
“The decision was taken going by their conducts in the prison, reports of the respective jail superintendents and prisoners’ future plan if they were allowed to come out of the jail, besides the observations of the courts handling the cases,’ he added.
Chairing the meeting chief minister Raghubar Das said the government has considered the cases of the prisoners who were serving long terms in different jails. He said those who would come out of the jails should think of new life.
Das said the government does not want to harass people. He said tribals are emotionally charged and on many instances they have surrendered after the crime. The chief minister said the jail administration and police should keep tab on conducts of the prisoners and those on bail.
