Indrani Mukerjea, the prime accused in the killing of her daughter Sheena Bora, on Wednesday was being taken back to Byculla jail from JJ hospital where she had been admitted last week when she expressed a fear of a threat to her life.

Mukerjea had been admitted for treatment of a suspected drug overdose and was brought back to the jail, Inspector General (Prisons) Rajvardhan Sinha said.

Her health condition is better, the hospital’s dean Dr SD Nanandkar said.

While she was being taken back to the jail, a reporter asked her at the JJ Hospital whether she feared a threat to her life.

“Yes,” she replied without saying anything else, as the police rushed her out of the hospital to take her to the prison.

Mukerjea, 46, was on April 6 admitted to the hospital, where she was brought in a “semi-conscious” condition from her cell .

She subsequently underwent a series of medical tests.

Her urine samples were sent for analysis at a forensic laboratory here and after receiving its report, the hospital authorities said she had overdosed on antidepressants that were not prescribed to her.

“Her health has improved and we have carried out a detailed check-up today (Wednesday). She can be sent back to the jail and we have informed the police and jail authorities accordingly,” the hospital’s superintendent Dr Sanjay Surase told reporters.

An X-ray of her lungs had earlier shown a patch, for which she was still on antibiotics. The treatment would continue for the next couple of days, Surase said.

Asked if her earlier medication of anti-depressant drugs would continue, he said, “Those medicines were prescribed by jail doctors. It is up to them to continue with the same medicines or make any changes.”

The state prisons department had earlier ordered an inquiry to find out how Mukerjea fell ill in the jail. The IG (prisons) will submit his report to the department after completing the inquiry.
