Storm leaves 17 dead in Raj, Taj damaged

The heavy rains and storm on Wednesday left 17 people dead including five children in Bharatpur division.

Nearly two dozen injured people were rushed to community health centres and the district government hospital for treatment. Sub-divisional magistrate­s were monitoring the situation. SDM Dholpur OP Sharan said some 50 people have been injured as well.

Eleven people including 5 children died in Dholpur while 6 people died in Bharatpur district. One of the victims was a woman who had come from Agra to visit her relatives.

The storm brought down power lines and left the area in the dark for several hours.

Bharatpur district collector Narendra Kumar Gupta said ₹50,000 compensati­on from the Chief Minister’s Relief Fund for the kin of the victims. “We are trying to resume power in district,” he told journalist­s.

The bodies of the victims, which were kept in the mortuary Wednesday night, were handed over to the families after post mortem on Thursday.

Two minarets at the entry gate of the entry gate to the Taj Mahal collapsed on the intervenin­g night of Wednesday and Thursday in the heavy storm.

Three children died in Mathura district in a roof collapse. Their parents, daily wage labourers, were not at home.
