: The Dolpur police late on Wednesday arrested a 23-year-old man on the charges of killing his 21-year-old wife for dowry, police said.

The man concocted a story of loot to frame his neighbour for the crime, said Anup Singh, station house officer of Sarmathura police station.

The accused, identified as Rajveer Singh, 23, killed his wife, Rekham Devi, 21, by hitting her with a stone late on Tuesday and then carried her to the nearest hospital on a motorcycle by tying her to his back along with their one-and-a-half-month-old daughter, police said.

In hospital, the accused told police that some people of his village had attacked them and then fled from the hospital after admitting his wife and minor daughter, police said.

Singh, however, said that the woman’s father registered a case of murder against his son-in-law.

The man was arrested on Wednesday and he has confessed to his crime, Singh said.

The accused killed his wife by hitting her with a large stone while they were on their way to Karauli after attending a religious ceremony in Sheetalpura village in Dholpur, police said.

The couple was married a year back and had a daughter around a couple of months back.

The woman’s father said his son-in-law tortured his daughter for dowry ever since their wedding.

“The man was an idler. My daughter wanted him to work and asked him to take up a job as a daily-wage worker if nothing else was working out,” the woman’s father said.

“Rajveer wanted to remarry for dowry after killing my daughter.”

The woman’s body was handed over to her family members late on Tuesday after an autopsy, police said.
