Science coordinators workshop at JMI
Need to showcase India’s scientific talent before the world geoscientists at the 36th International Geological Congress being hosted by the country in 2020 was hightlighed at a twoday workshop of the coordinators of the Science Themes of the meet held at Jamia Millia Islamia from April 27. The objective of the workshop that concluded today was to interact with the Coordinators and know from them their plans for steering their respective themes, inviting international experts for the plenary sessions of the Congress and attracting abstracts from the geoscientists for the Congress. Addressing the participants, Prof.Talat Ahmad, VC, Jamia Millia Islamia and Chair, Science Program Committee, 36thIGC stated that it is matter of great pride for India as it is the only Asian country to host the mega event twice.
Padmashree Prof. VP Dimri, President, 36th IGC, talked about the enormous efforts that had gone into winning the bid to host the prestigious event and stated that India must try its best to showcase its scientific talent and geological superlatives before the world geoscientists at the congress. The Science Program of the 36thIGC comprises 42 themes covering the entire spectrum of geoscience subjects.
The meetings of the SPC and Science Advisory Committee, 36th IGC were also held on the sidelines of the workshop. Among others present in the meeting were Padmashree Prof.Harsh Gupta; Dr. S K Acharya, former, DG, GSI, Prof. D. Mukhopadhyay, University of Calcutta, Prof. M. Deb, Delhi University, Prof D M Banerjee, Delhi University, and Prof. A B Roy, Presidency University.
The event is being jointly funded by the Ministry of Mines and Ministry of Earth Sciences with the active support of the Indian National Science Academy (INSA), and the Science Academies of the other neighbouring co-host countries, Bangladesh, Nepal, Pakistan and Sri Lanka.
