On May 2, a police officer arrested a 20-year-old man on the charge of raping a 3-year-old girl in Gharsana (Sriganganagar) in northern Rajasthan. A day later, he got a letter — from his daughter: make sure that the man gets death.

“I came to know today that a 3-year-old girl has been raped in Gharsana,” she began her May 3 letter. “When I heard about it, I felt sad and angry. Now I understand why mummy doesn’t let me go out alone.”

Nidhika Chauhan wrote her Class 12 exam recently and is awaiting result. Chauhan’s father, Vikram Singh, is station house officer of Gharsana police station. He is forced to stay away from his family in faraway Ganganagar, and visits them once a fortnight. This time, his wife, Madhu, told him to not come home. She said, “I told him I will take care of the kids; you focus on the case.”

In the hand-written letter, which Chauhan sent to the police officer through WhatsApp, the 16-year-old wonders why people commit such crimes.

“I find it strange how someone can do it with such a small child. He must be a monster,” she told this reporter over phone from Ganganagar. “I was very sad and thought I would pen down my thoughts.”

Her mother, Madhu, is a Hindi teacher in a government senior secondary school. “My husband told me about the case the day he arrested the accused. I shared it with my daughter because she needs to know the kind of people that roam the streets,” she said.

The man arrested for the 3-year-old’s rape is already facing another rape charge. Budhram Bavri was arrested on December 1, 2017, on the charge of raping a 10-year-old. He was jailed and released on bail on March 12. On May 2, he assaulted the 3-year-old daughter of a brick kiln labourer.

Chauhan wrote: “Papa, I promise you that if you are able to get death sentence for the accused, I will agree with you on everything.”
