The state government on Thursday allowed temporary release of incarcerated Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD) chief, Lalu Prasad, from jail for three days on parole to attend his son’s wedding. However, he was restrained from speaking to media and making political comments during the period of parole.

Prasad on Tuesday applied before jail authorities for release for five days from May 10 to May 14. “Acceding to his request, the government has granted parole for three days only, with certain riders,” said inspector general (jail) Harsh Mangla.

Prasad’s close associate, who is looking after his legal cases, and RJD legislator from Bahadurpur (Darbhanga), Bhola Yadav, said, “As per the release order, he has been restrained from speaking to media and making political comments. He has to report to jail authorities on his return on May 14.”

Prasad’s son, Tej Pratap Yadav, will tie the knot with Aishwarya Rai, granddaughter of ex-Bihar chief minister Daroga Rai and daughter of senior RJD leader and MLA Chandrika Rai, on May 12.

Prasad has been serving jail terms here at Birsa Munda Central Jail (BMCJ) since December 23 last year after his conviction in three different fodder scam cases. He is undergoing treatment at Rajendra Institute of Medical Sciences (RIMS), Ranchi.

Soon after the release order was forwarded to RIMS, officials of BMCJ reached the hospital to complete all documentary formalities. Security at the hospital was beefed up with deployment of additional forces.

Prasad came out of the hospital in a wheelchair at 4pm. He rode to a SUV that took him to Ranchi’s Birsa Munda Airport. Along with four others, including Bhola Yadav and an inspector rank officer for security, Prasad boarded the Patna-bound Indigo flight.

Earlier, Prasad had applied for provisional bail on health grounds before Jharkhand high court. His petition is likely to come up for hearing on May 11. BMCJ authorities, on March 17, shifted Prasad to RIMS after he complained of discomfort and chest pain. Later, RIMS authorities referred him to AIIMS, New Delhi, for specialised treatment.
