Minor detained on charges of smuggling, 35 cows rescued
BHARATPUR:The FOLLOWING A TIPOFF ABOUT CATTLE BEING SMUGGLED TO HARYANA FOR SLAUGHTER, POLICE RAIDED A VILLAGE
Bharatpur police on Friday rescued 35 cows and detailed a minor on the charges of smuggling cattle, police said.
The minor confessed that he was taking the cattle to Haryana for slaughter, police said.
HT, however, could not independently verify this as his parents could not be reached.
The rescued cattle have taken to a cow shelter in Bandipur, police said, adding that they were interrogating the minor to find out the identity of people who are involved in cow smuggling.
Following a tip-off about cattle being smuggled to Haryana for slaughter, police raided a village, said station house officer at Pahari police station Ramesh Tanwar.
“When we raided the forest near Mungaska village, we found a boy taking the cows across the district’s border. The boy’s father, Pahlu Khan, however, managed to escape,” Tanwar said.
He further said police were on the lookout for Khan and his accomplices in the illegal trade.
“The boy has confessed about taking the cows to a slaughterhouse in Haryana.”
Villages along the Bharat border with Haryana are used by cattle smugglers, a police official said. “The smugglers herd stray cattle from local areas and either transport them to Haryana or drive the animals through dirt tracks to hoodwink the police into believing that they are cattle herders,” the official said.
Police data shows that 27 cases of smuggling under the Rajasthan Bovine Animal (Prohibition of Slaughter and Regulation Temporary Migration or Export) Act, 1995, were registered in different police stations in the district in 2017.
