More flights, less demand: June airfares see sharp dip

: There is good news for air travellers as airfares have come down on most flights operating out of Jaipur starting June 1 due to the fall in demand and increase in the number of flights.

Airfares that had climbed up during the last winter holiday season remained high until last week, tour operators said.

While fares for destinations like Chennai and Jammu remain high as the number of flights is less, fares for flights from Jaipur to Delhi, Mumbai and other popular destinations, have come down.

While the starting fares on budget carrier SpiceJet for one-way trip from Jaipur to Delhi for June 1 is ₹ 1,802, the minimum fare on Jet Airways is ₹1,970.

On the Jaipur-Mumbai route, the starting fare on Indigo flight for June 1 is ₹ 3,917.

“The fares on most routes have dropped by 15-20% in the last one week. Apart from the increase in the number of flights, the other reason for fares coming down is that holiday season will end in May,” said Dilip Ramani of Skylight Tours and Travels.

Three new flights to Bengaluru and Pune will commence from Jaipur airport from June 1. At present, 61 daily flights operate from Jaipur out of which six are international and the rest are domestic.

The total number of flights will go up to 65 from June 1.

The fares on some routes had shot up in March after the DGCA had grounded Airbus A320neo aircrafts of Indigo.

On March 12, 11 Airbus A320neo aircrafts belonging to IndiGo and GoAir, powered by Pratt & Whitney engines, were grounded due to engine glitches.

The fares to some routes were also expected to come down after full implementation of regional air connectivity scheme in Rajasthan under which many tier-three cities will be connected to Delhi.
