Rickshaw puller fills potholes in free time
He took up a mission three years ago and still working towards it with zeal. Nand Kishor Saini, a rickshaw puller of Kutti Mohalla in Kaman town, has been covering potholed roads in the town whenever he finds time from his work.
Saini passed Class 8 from a private school in 2004, after which he quit studies due to poor financial condition of his father, Charan Singh Saini. After his father’s death five years ago, the family’s financial condition worsened.
Youngest among three brothers, Saini decided to pull rickshaw to earn a livelihood for the family. Three years ago, he bought a rickshaw on loan and started the job.
“I saw some accidents which were caused by pits on roads. Two-wheeler riders suffered serious injuries in the accidents. It was then I decided to fill the pits to prevent road accidents,” he said, while talking about what prompted him to fill the potholed roads.
He carries waste material and soil on his rickshaw and fills the pits on roads.
He said locals and family members criticised him for the work calling that it was “shameful step”, but that did not deter him from doing his duty.
“I feel satisfaction in filling pits on roads that save people from unwanted accidents. My late father had suggested me before his death that we should serve people and work for society when we are free from work,” said Saini.
He said he never knew that repairing potholed roads is the work of local civic body.
Saini also carries injured cows on his rickshaw to cow shelters at Jarkhor, Bhojan Thali, Mullaka, Hodel in Haryana. He also buries dead cows.
He earns around Rs 500 daily. His mother Lachcho Devi is a housewife, while his elder brothers Babulal Saini and Tek Chand Saini work as confectioner and carpenter respectively.
