Uber Cup: India beat Australia

Indian women’s badminton team, led by Saina Nehwal, notched up a dominating 4-1 win over lowly Australia in their Group A Uber Cup match.

After going down 1-4 to Canada in the opening tie, Saina and Co. won all the matches, except the first women’s doubles.Saina saw off Hsuan-Yu Wendy Chen 21-14 , 21-19 to give India a 1-0 lead.

However, Meghana Jakkampudi and Poorvisha S Ram suffered a 13-21, 16-21 loss to Gronya Somerville and Renuga Veeran

Vaishnavi Reddy Jakka, 16, then dumped Jennifer Tam 21-17, 21-13. Sanyogita Ghorpade and Prajakta Sawant defeated Louisa Ma and Ann-Louise Slee 21-19, 21-11 in the second doubles while Anura Prabhudesa­i brushed aside Zecily Fung 21-6, 21-7 to seal the contest 4-1.

SATHIYAN-SANIL WIN SILVER IN THAILAND

: The Indian pair of G Sathiyan and Sanil Shetty won a silver medal in men’s doubles in Thailand Open table tennis .

Sathiyan and Sanil beat Japan 3-1 and Malaysia 3-0 . In the semifinals they edged past compatriot­s Harmeet Desai and Manav Thakkar 3-2. In the final, the Indian duo lost 11-9 ,12-14, 9-11, 7-11 to Tobias Hippler and Kilian Ort of Germany.

AMIYA MALLICK TO TRAIN IN EUROPE

New Delhi: National sprint champion Amiya Mallick will train in Europe to prepare for the upcoming Asian Games. The four-week training stint started on Monday and the internatio­nal runner will be based in Finland. He will compete in two-three races before heading back to India to participat­e in inter-state meet at Guwahati from June 26.
