Son of a poor farmer, Vishvendra Singh topped the Class 12 results declared by the state Board of Secondary Education on Wednesday.

Vishvendra, 15, student of Baba Sugriv Senior Secondary School in Bharatpur, scored 99.40% in science stream.

After getting the news of his success, people from his village and schoolteachers rushed to his house to greet him.

Resident of Basairi village under Rupwas sub-division in Bharatpur district, Vishvendra comes from a family that does not have a television, refrigerator, cooler or smart phone. His father Devi Singh owns oneand-a-half hectare agriculture land to take care of the family needs, which includes educating his three children.

Vishvendra’s elder sister, Uma Chaudhary, is in BA second year at Rameshwary Devi Girls College in the city and younger brother, Bhupendra Singh, is in Class 10 at the village school. Vishvendra lived with his sister in a rented accommodation in the city for his Class 12 studies.

He studied till Class 10 at Rakhi Adarsh Public Senior Secondary School at his village before joining his present school in Class 11 in 2016. He obtained 91.5% marks in Class 10.

While studying in the village, Vishvendra helped his father in agricultural activities. “My father always encouraged me to perform well in studies and to become an officer,” he said. “He always encouraged me to work hard to achieve my goals and leave everything on God for the result,” he added.

“I follow ‘Action is thy duty and reward is not thy concern’ message of Bhagvad Gita,” said the topper, adding that, “I want to clear the civil services exams to become an IAS officer after completing IIT and serve people and country, particularly the poor and villagers.”

Vishvendra’s religious father and mother, Neelam Devi, are already on 84 Kos Brij Parikrama at Govardhan in Mathura district of Uttar Pradesh, which may take around seven days. “I am unable to believe that my son has topped the state, as I have been incapable of providing better education to my kids due to bad financial condition,” said his father on phone from Mathura.

Commenting over Vishvendra’s success, Human Welfare and Research Foundation director Sitaram Gupta said, “We need to look for talented youths in district (Bharatpur) to support them and realise their dream. Foundation will offer him (Vishvendra) financial help to his further education.”
