LUCKNOW: PRAVEEN KUMAR, DEPUTY INSPECTOR GENERAL, LAW AND ORDER, SAID SAHANI NEVER CARRIED A WEAPON AND GOT THE SERVICE PISTOL ISSUED A FEW WEEKS AGO

A senior police officer on Tuesday shot himself dead with a service pistol inside his room at Uttar Pradesh Anti-Terrorist Squad (ATS) headquarters in Gomtinagar in Lucknow.

Rajesh Sahani, a 1992 batch UP Provincial Police Service officer, committed suicide by shooting himself at 12:45pm in his office with an official weapon, said Anand Kumar, Additional Director General (ADG), Law and Order.

Kumar said the reason for the suicide is being ascertained.

Sahani’s room has been sealed and a forensic team is investigating the matter.

Praveen Kumar, deputy inspector general, law and order, said Sahani never carried a weapon and got the service pistol issued a few weeks ago.

48-year-old Sahani was looking after the case related to a Pithoragarh resident Ramesh Singh Kanyal, who was arrested for helping the ISI to bug the house of an Indian diplomat in Islamabad, Pakistan, where he worked as a cook between 2015 and 2017.

He was with the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for around two years before joining the Uttar Pradesh ATS in July 2014.

He also led the encounter of self radicalised ISI module Saifullah in Haji Colony of Kakori, Lucknow on March 7, 2017.
