Woman thanks PM for her knee transplant
Alwar resident Laxmi Devi, who recently underwent a knee transplant successfully, thanked Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday. Modi, who interacted with her via video conferencing, won the heart of the 54-year-old woman, who underwent the transplant under Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Jan Aushadhi Kendra for ₹ 60,000.
Overjoyed Laxmi Devi’s happiness knew no bounds when the PM inquired about her health. She was thankful to the extent that she compared Modi with god. Later, Laxmi Devi said that she had been suffering from a knee problem for the last three years, that slowly made her unable to move. Doctors at private hospitals were demanding ₹4 lakh for the transplant, an amount that was way beyond her means.
It was her son who came across the scheme of Pradhan Mantri Bhartiya Aushadhi Kendra in a newspaper. They applied and her knees were transplanted at Ram Manohar Lohia hospital in Delhi on May 18. Her son Dinesh Meena of Delhi Police said that the transplant will encourage others to go for it without hesitation . “We had been discouraged by people in our village. But the success will now remove the seeds of doubt from their mind,” said Meena.
Chief medical and health officer Dr SS Agarwal said Laxmi Devi was first examined at government hospital of Alwar before video conferencing with the PM.
