17 killed as tourist bus rams into road divider in UP’s Mainpuri

At least 17 people were killed and two dozen others injured when a private tourist bus they were travelling in hit a road divider and overturned in Mainpuri district of Uttar Pradesh on Wednesday, police said.

The bus was on its way from Rajasthan’s Jaipur to Farukkhaba­d in Uttar Pradesh when the accident took place near Kiratpur village around 5am.

Mainpuri district magistrate Pradeep Kumar confirmed the death of 17 passengers, and said 24 people were injured. Three of the victims suffered severe injuries and were shifted to the Safai hospital in Etawah district, one of whom died during treatment.

Other injured passengers were admitted to Mainpuri district hospital. Senior police officials from Mainpuri rushed to the accident spot to review the rescue operation.

Some of the passengers said the driver was speeding. They also said many of the victims were passengers who were travelling on the roof of the bus.

Uttar Pradesh chief minister Yogi Adityanath condoled the deaths and announced an ex-gratia of ~2 lakh each to the families of the victims and ~50,000 to those seriously injured .
