THAPA IN BOXING SQUAD

mix of youth and seasoned campaigners will be part of India’s boxing squad for the Asian Games in Jakarta.

The Boxing Federation of India (BFI) announced a 10-member contingent on Friday. In the men’s team, India will rely on the experience of Vikas Krishan (75 kg), Manoj Kumar (69Kg) and Shiva Thapa (60kg) to win medals, while Gaurav Solanki (52 Kg), Mohammad Hussamuddin (56 kg) and Amit (49 kg), who won medals at CWG, were also picked. Among women, Sonia Lather (57kg), Sarjubala Devi (51kg) and Pavitra (60kg) were selected.

Continuing with their recent policy of selecting boxers on the basis of rankings and performances which came under criticism by some boxers during the Gold Coast Commonwealth Games, the BFI did not hold trials in all the categories. Trials were held only in two men and women’s 51 kg, where Mary Kom has pulled out. Some big names who missed out on account of the policy were Gaurav Bidhuri and Mandeep Jangra.
