poll preparations pick pace, the Congress is all set to declare a team of new spokespersons and panellists for taking part in public forums and debate on TV channels.

The Congress is strengthening its organisation at all levels (booth to state), its frontal wings, various other cells and social media. A senior leader, on the condition of anonymity, said a dozen or two names will be declared by All India Congress Committee’s (AICC) media cell. In January this year, AICC secretary Pranav Jha and media coordinator Rohan Gupta had interviewed over 500 probable aspirants for the position of spokesperson and panellist through a three-day talent hunt.

He said the aspirants were interviewed to know their strategy for the elections, background and contribution to the party and why they wanted to become spokespersons. “They have shortlisted around 50 names. The candidates will be further shortlisted in the coming few weeks by AICC communication department office bearers. There is a chance that Priyanka Chaturvedi (convenor) will soon visit the state,” he said.

The leader said that the names would have been declared earlier, but it got delayed due to Karnataka elections.

This year the AICC communication department has released names of around 50 new spokespersons for Madhya Pradesh and will soon declare names for Rajasthan.

“The list of new spokesperson and panellist will be declared soon considering the upcoming assembly elections,” said Archana Sharma, chairperson media and communication department, Rajasthan Congress.

This time, both the Congress and the BJP are not only focusing on public issues and achievements but also stressing on ‘hyper-local’ issues when it comes to preparing strategies for the assembly elections, scheduled later this year. The Congress is also planning to include hyperlocal issues while drafting the party’s manifesto and use them for social media campaigns.

“We are expanding our IT cell network, which earlier was limited to state and district level. Now, the IT cell will have its presence at every assembly constituency block and booth,” said another leader. The AICC and Rajasthan Congress social media teams are gearing up to beat BJP at its own game. Also, a ‘War Room’ is being set up in the state, he added.
