The fire department of the Jaipur Municipal Corporation (JMC) will soon use special bikes for fighting fires in the narrow lanes of the walled city area, said JMC deputy commissioner (fire) Shipra Sharma.

The civic body has procured 20 specially-equipped Royal Enfield Bullet (350cc) motorcycles. “These bikes have been fabricated with a fire-fighting system based on mist technology. The bikes will beat traffic pressure and save critical time in quick fire response,” she added.

The JMC firemen, who have been trained in operating the new fire-fighting system, demonstrated the use of these bikes before the fire committee at Malviya Nagar fire station on Monday.

“All 170 firemen of the corporation have received the basic training. In the second round of training, we will also involve people from the civil defence, who help us in fire-fighting,” Sharma said.

In the conventional fire-fighting, water is used to douse fire, but in the mist technology, water is thrown at such high pressure that a cloud of mist surrounds the fire, lowering the temperature and cutting oxygen supply to the fire, she said. The mist technology, she added, saved water, is more effective and can also fight electrical fires that conventional water-based technology cannot.

Each of these bikes has two cylinders with 9.5 litre of water and foam. Two air cylinders are there to refill the main cylinders. The bikes, the JMC official said, will save fuel for combating small fires like transformers and garbage fires.

JMC fire committee members said there has been a demand for the bikes for the walled city areas for many years. “The bikes will be commissioned by the end of this month,” Sharma said. Ten bikes each will be deployed at the Ghat Gate and Bani Park fire stations to reach the walled city area from two sides.
