Neel Kanth Uprety nominated as new Nepal ambassador to India
Nepal government on Monday recommended former Chief Election Commission Neel Kanth Uprety as the new ambassador to India.
The post has been lying vacant since months after outgoing ambassador, Deep Kumar Uphadhya put his papers to contest in elections in October last year.
Uprety is known as close to top ruling party leaders including Prime Minister K P Oli and another senior communist leader, Madhav Kumar Nepal is shot of handling diplomatic experiences.
But in his resume, while working as Elections Commissioner and Chief Election Commissioner, he had worked with several diplomatic missions based in Kathmandu and successfully negotiated several projects for EC of Nepal.
An sharp IT professional, Uprety was appointed chief elections commission of Nepal on March 24, 2013. Uprety served as officiating chief election commissioner for a period of over four years before his reappointment to the chief elections of the EC, Nepal.
He also served United Nations electoral operations in Afghanistan during 2004 to 2005 and one between November 2012. He served as acting and full- fledged EC chief during the first and second constituent assembly elections. Prior to that, he also served Election Commissioner, October 2006 to May 2009.
He is MA in Economics from Tribhuvan University, Postgraduate Diploma in Public Administration, TU, Kathmandu and MS in Computing Science, Staffordshire University, Staffordshire, United Kingdom.
The name will forward to the Parliamentary Hearing Special Committee for the hearing before seeking approval from the country that the nomination is made.
After the concurrence, the announcement will be made by the President, as per the constitution.
