Police in Uttar Pradesh’s Jhansi district have arrested one of the three men who allegedly molested a 16-year-old girl and recorded the incident which was later uploaded on the social media, a senior officer said on Tuesday.

Jhansi superintendent of police Kuldeep Narain confirmed that the main accused was arrested Monday night.

A case against the three men under sections of Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act has been registered in Chirgaon police station for the incident that took place on July 12.

“The police became active as soon as it saw the video, where a girl was taken to a secluded area on a bike. The girl was then harassed there,” Narain added.

Police said she was on her way to give food to her mother, who was working in the fields, and was offered a lift by her friend on his motorbike. On the way, the two were stopped by a group which included minor boys - near a forested area, police added.

In the video that was uploaded on the social media, the men could be seen dragging her and molesting her while she shouts for help. She is also heard asking the men not to shoot the video.

Earlier this month, three men were arrested in Birgunj for molesting a girl and recording the act in a video. On July 6, three men were arrested for abducting and molesting a woman in Unnao. The matter came to the police’s attention six days after a video of the incident began doing rounds on the social media.
