Somnath responding to treatment: Doctor

of former Lok Sabha speaker, Somnath Chatterjee, deteriorat­ed further on Sunday afternoon after he suffered a “mild heart attack” while he was on dialysis at a city- based private hospital.

Although there was no official confirmati­on or health bulletin from the hospital authoritie­s, a doctor associated with the hospital, requesting anonymity, confirmed that Chatterjee had survived an attack. “However, he has revived and is responding to treatment. He is in ICCU,” the doctor added. CPI(M) central committee member, Robin Deb, also claimed having received informatio­n about the heart attack on Sunday morning. “But later we heard that he has revived,” he added.

A 10- time Lok Sabha member from 1971 to 2009, Chatterjee has been on ventilator support at a city- based private hospital since August 10 and was on a dialysis.

on August 5. However, his condition deteriorat­ed again on August 10, following which he had to be hospitalis­ed. Chatterjee has served as the speaker of the 14th Lok Sabha from 2004 to 2009.

He was a Lok Sabha member from Burdwan, Jadavpur and Bolpur from 1971 to 2009. He was only defeated once, in 1984, by the current chief minister of West Bengal Mamata Banerje, who was then associated with the Congress. A member of CPI(M) since 1968, Chatterjee was expelled by the party with Prakash Karat as the then general secretary, in 2008.
