India reel at gloomy Lord’s as England push for victory

-

GRIM STATE Anderson first pacer to take 100 wickets at home of cricket as visitors stare at huge loss

and was bowled off Anderson’s incoming delivery in the first innings.

Anderson delivered a pair for Vijay when he got one to nip back and take the inside edge to wicketkeeper Jonny Bairstow. KL Rahul, also under pressure to deliver, made 10 when Anderson trapped him, beaten as he pushed tentatively from the crease.

Vijay, 34, has struggled in the last two overseas tours. In South Africa, he had scores of 1, 13, 46, 9, 8, 25 and made 20 and 6 in Edgbaston, falling leg before on both occasions. With Shikhar Dhawan dropped after the first game and questions over Vijay’s form and reflexes, it will only compound India’s top-order troubles.

Pujara and Rahane were watchful, looking to rotate the strike with Rahane putting away a couple of bad deliveries from Woakes for fours.

England resumed on 357/6 in the morning and looked to score quickly before Root declared when Sam Curran fell to Hardik Pandya. Pandya and Mohammed Shami finished with three wickets each. It was celebration time for Anderson however as the 36-year-old became the first bowler to take 100 wickets at Lord’s when he dismissed Vijay. He is only the second bowler to score a bowling century at a single venue.
