Woman shot dead, man killed in grenade attack in J&K’s Pulwama

In the third killing of a civilian in the past nine days, a woman was shot dead by unidentifi­ed gunmen in south Kashmir’s Pulwama district on Friday, the police said. A grenade was also lobbed towards the office of district police officer (DPO) in Awantipora, killing a man and injuring three others.

Police said Shameema, 47, was fired upon near her parents house at Drabgham village in the afternoon. “She died on the spot,” an officer of Rajpora police station said. “We are investigat­ing the cause of the attack,” he said.

In a series of tweets, Kashmir police said, “Proscribed terror outfit HM (Hizbul Mujahideen) behind the killing of a lady at Darbgham #Pulwama. Grenade incident by terrorists at #Awantipora has led to one critical injury to a civilian .@JmuKmrPoli­ce.”

An officer manning the police control room in Awantipora said militants lobbed a grenade towards the main gate of DPO, but missed the target. He said that four civilians were injured including Abdul Ahad Pinchoo,in his 50s, who received critical injuries in his head. “Pinchoo succumbed to his injuries at Shri Maharaja Hari Singh Hospital,” he said, adding one injured person is still undergoing treatment.

So far three civilians have been killed in the past 10 days in south Kashmir.

The bullet riddled body of a man was recovered Monday morning hours after he was abducted by gunmen from his home in Pulwama district.

Police had said the militants abducted 26-year-old Gulzar Ahmad Bhat after barging into his house at Murran in Pulwama on Sunday night.

On August 8, suspected militants allegedly abducted Arif Ahmad of Khudwani and Mehraj Ahmad of Hawoora, Kulgam from their homes.

Hours later Arif was found unconsciou­s by locals with marks on his body at Arwan. He was rushed to the hospital, where he breathed his last on August 9.
