NEET aspirant stabbed to death over cricket brawl

student, who was preparing for the NEET to become a doctor, was stabbed to death by a drunken man following a brawl, in Kota on Saturday.

Atul Singh (17), hailing from Uttar Pradesh, was playing cricket with his fellow coaching students and friends in a public park in the Mahaveer Nagar III area of Kota in the evening when the incident took place.

The victim’s cousin, Saurabh Singh, said that Atul’s father, Ramharsh Singh, is a doctor in Mau district of UP. Youngest of the three siblings, Atul came to Kota three years back to prepare for medical entrance examinatio­n. “He stayed in a paying guest accommodat­ion in Mahaveer Nagar III,” Saurabh said.

Mahaveer Nagar police station sub-inspector Ramswaroop Meena said that the accused, Rahul Bhatti, 20, was arrested on Sunday on charges of killing Atul . Bhatti had dropped out of school after he failed to pass Class 10 examinatio­n, the police officer said.

Meena said that Bhatti went to the park to play with Singh and his friends and engaged in a brawl. He allegedly stabbed Atul with a sharp-edged weapon and fled the spot.

Locals took injured Atul to the New Government College Hospital of Kota, where he succumbed to his injuries on Saturday night.

Paying guest owner Vishal Verma (35) said that Atul was a bright student and had secured all India rank 20,000 in NEET in 2017. Refusing to get dogged down, Atul came to Kota in July this year and took admission in a coaching institute to improve his rank.

Atul’s body has been handed over to his father for last rites on Sunday afternoon, police said.

Earlier, a student of Haryana was murdered in Kota in 2017 and another student of Bihar was killed in an infighting among students of Bihar in 2016.
