Hospital refuses transplant at last moment, patient dies

: A doctor, suffering from liver cirrhosis, died on August 25 in Jaipur after the Sawai Man Singh (SMS) Hospital allegedly refused a liver transplant at the last moment. The hospital authorities said that an Institute of Liver and Biliary Sciences (ILBS) team refused to come for the transplant so the donor’s liver was sent to a private hospital in Jaipur.

In January, 58-year-old Dr Mukesh Babu Goyal from Jhunjhunu, who had completed his MD in medicine in 1978 from Sawai Man Singh Medical College, was diagnosed with liver cirrhosis and needed a transplant. “He registered himself for the transplant at the SMS hospital in April,” said Dr Tanuja Gupta, wife of Dr Goyal.

On July 19, the SMS Hospital called him on and said that they had a brain-dead patient and the liver would be available for transplant. All pre-anaesthetic and other diagnostic tests were completed on July 20. However, at the last moment, the hospital told the family that the team from ILBS did not turn up and the transplant cannot take place. The family returned to Jhunjhunu.

Dr Tanjua Gupta said that later they found out that there were issues between the doctors at the hospital and ILBS team. She also alleged that hospital gave wrong information to them that the donor’s relatives had refused the organ donation. “Dr Goyal’s condition deteriorated and he was admitted to a private hospital in Sikar from August 18 to 22 and was then referred to EHCC hospital in Jaipur, where he died on August 25,” she said.

“Had Dr Goyal undergone the liver transplant, he would have been alive today. He lost his life because of the internal politics at SMS hospital,” Dr Tanuja alleged.

SMS Medical College principal Dr US Agarwal said that the ILBS team had refused to come for the transplant. “The ILBS team refused to come. The transplant has to be done by doctors from the SMS hospital under the supervision of an ILBS team. There were some issues, which are being resolved and liver transplants will soon resume at SMS Hospital.”

A doctor at the SMS hospital, who did not want to be named as he is not authorised to speak to the media, said that the gastroenterological surgeons and ILBS teams made certain demands for the post-operative care, which were not being fulfilled by the hospital administration, because of which the ILBS team refused to come.

The first cadaver liver transplant at SMS hospital was conducted in February 2017 by experts from ILBS and doctors from the hospital. According to an agreement, the first 25 liver transplants at the hospital will be done by ILBS experts and SMS Hospital doctors. So far, five liver transplants have taken place.
