: There was drama at the University of Rajasthan, Jaipur, campus on Thursday when two leaders of the National Students Union of India (NSUI) held a press conference with intravenous fluid drips in hand and bloodstained shirts.

National Students Union of India (NSUI) president Abhimanyu Puniya and NSUI candidate fighting on the post of president Ranveer Singhania alleged that they were injured late on Wednesday when some unidentified men attacked them on the university campus, the police said.

The two were allegedly beaten up on campus around 11.30pm on Wednesday as they were approaching the main gate of the university. They were admitted to SMS Hospital’s trauma centre immediately as the police arrived.

An FIR has been lodged against five unknown people under section 323 and 341 of Indian Penal Code.

“We have booked five unidentified persons for voluntarily causing hurt and wrongful restraint,” said Hanuman Prasad

Meena, additional deputy commissioner of police (Jaipur East).

“Ranveer Singh Singhania and Abhimanyu Punia, along with other members, were campaigning in the hostels around 11.30 pm which is against norms. When they reached a vacant area, they had a fight with some unidentified persons and got injured,” he added. The incident comes a day before the polls on Friday.

The two NSUI leaders said the attack on them was a result of their raising their voice against ABVP’s violation of the code of conduct a day ago. “The state government is miffed by a student body (NSUI). It was just a day ago that we raised our voices peacefully against the violation of the code of conduct by the ABVP. On the same night we were brutally beaten up,” said Ranveer Singh Singhania. “We were badly beaten up using iron roads and bamboo sticks. The opposition wants to weaken the party by attacking the NSUI office bearers,” said Abhimanyu Poonia.

Condemning the incident, Sachin Pilot urged immediate action against the assailants. “It is unfortunate that the number of anti-social elements is on the rise in electoral politics. They are vindictive and want to influence the elections by assaulting the candidates,” said Pilot.
